Salary/Position Classification

  • $44,000 annual, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite.

Purpose of Position

The purpose of the position is to provide academic advisement, recruitment, and retention to undergraduate students at the University of North Dakota. This position helps to advise any/all undergraduate majors and minors. Academic advisors help to serve the needs of the Core Advising team as well as any unmet student needs across campus. Academic advisors will utilize Campus Connection (Academic Requirement Reports), Degree Map, and Starfish to advise and interact with students regularly. Advisors will attend commencement ceremonies and other student success programming.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • General Advising
    • Provide academic, advanced degree program, and career advising for current on campus and online programs, demonstrating knowledge of all degree requirements
    • Meet with students on an appointment and drop-in basis
    • Advise incoming students during new student/first-year advising and registration
    • Communicate with incoming transfer students on a continuous and ongoing basis
    • Understand needs of various student populations at the institution as a whole and within assigned college(s)
    • Understand and appropriately use various advising models
    • Participate in assessment of advising
    • Collaborate with departments to address advising needs
    • Write letters of recommendation for students and serve as a reference for students as needed
  • Understand, utilize, and accurately communicate policies, procedures, technology/tools, and resources to advisees
    • Understand institutional specific policies and procedures such as term dates and deadlines, the ES petition, the Ad Pro petition, withdrawal processes, graduation applications, changes of major, collaborative course processes, readmission and reinstatement processes, academic grievance processes, etc.
    • Understand program/college/university goals for retention and graduation
    • Understand the basics of financial aid and when to refer students to other resources
    • Utilize career exploration tools (e.g., career exploration software, Academic and Career Exploration, career services events, pairings of degree options, graduate or professional degree options) in the advisement of students
    • Utilize and connect students with campus resources and services
    • Utilize advising technology including student information system, advising platform, and others as determined necessary in the completion of effective general advising
    • Understand student technology including student use of learning management system and career services platform
    • Work as a study skills support 
  • Participation in student centered events, professional development, and other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience in an academic or professional setting
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
