  • $65,000 annual, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite.

Purpose of Position

The CEM Research Institute and the Department of Chemical Engineering research activities are centered on the development of novel separation technologies. The development of advanced materials and processes for separations is a critical area of research that underpins progress in energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and the production of high-purity chemicals. To accelerate progress in this strategically important field, we need a dedicated research scientist with deep expertise in membrane science, materials synthesis, and transport phenomena. This individual will lead cutting-edge research aimed at developing next-generation membranes—ranging from polymeric and inorganic hybrids to mixed-matrix and nanoporous materials—tailored for high-performance separations in applications including water purification, gas separation, carbon capture, and chemical manufacturing.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory/bench testing, report/present results, participate in proposals and research articles writing, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students
  • Conduct basic and applied research and prepare journal publications and proposals for obtaining funding
  • Support research and development initiatives as appropriate, contribute to the development of funding proposals by identifying funding opportunities, preparing technical sections of proposals, and assisting in determining the necessary equipment/personnel to perform the proposed work within a specified budget. 
  • Other Research Related Duties such as performing literature searches at the beginning of new projects, as well as existing projects, and technology applications. while maintaining professional, team-building relationships with a broad array of UND, CEM, and CHE department personnel.

Required Competencies

  • Record of success as a researcher with demonstrated ability to:
    • Formulate a research plan
    • Set up a research program to meet the specific needs of the MMI
    • Independently write research reports and journal publications
  • Strong writing/communication skills

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related field
  • Experience/thesis work to be relevant to Dr. Alshami’ s group research portfolio, which includes, but not limited to:
    • Polymer synthesis
    • Membranes fabrication and manufacturing
    • Materials development and characterization
    • Process engineering involving systems design and scale-up
    • Sustainable and energy-efficient process development
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
  • Hands-on experience in operating laboratory or pilot-scale experimental research equipment
  • Development of cleaning protocols and fouling mitigation strategies
  • Scientific writing and publishing experience
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related field
  • Patent Filing and Innovation experience.
  • Entrepreneurship or Tech Transfer awareness for the commercialization of novel membranes
