Purpose of Position

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a 12-month, non-tenure-track Research Assistant Professor position in the area of biomedical imaging and spectroscopy. This appointment is contingent upon the availability of funding.

The Department offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs in Biomedical Engineering and is a collaborative unit within the College of Engineering & Mines. The department currently includes six full-time and one part-time faculty members, with approximately 60 undergraduate and 40 graduate students enrolled.

Research within the department is supported by external funding from agencies such as the USDA and others. Faculty research is housed primarily in Columbia Hall, which contains classrooms, several dedicated laboratories, and over 10 faculty and student offices, as well as space for modern teaching and research activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Research line in Biophotonics and specifically Spectroscopy.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biomedical engineering, including on-campus and online courses.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Establish a productive and externally funded research program in biomedical imaging and spectroscopy.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across the university and with external partners.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities. 

Required Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Competence with modern technology and willingness to adopt new tools for course delivery.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering
  • Research experience in biomedical imaging, spectroscopy, optical systems, and/or biophotonics.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity in refereed journals or conference proceedings.
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring students and supervising research projects.
  • Experience in course development and online/asynchronous delivery.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals.
  • Evidence of successful grant writing or involvement in funded projects.
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary or multi-institutional research teams
