Flooring Specialist

Purpose of Position

Perform technical aspects of flooring installation and removal; coordination of flooring installation and removal; clerical duties and basic carpentry in the construction and maintenance of university-owned facilities.

All Facilities Management positions are subject to overtime & callback twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, as needed/directed by supervisors/directors.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Technical Aspects of Flooring Installation and Removal
  • In coordination with Planning, Design and Construction (PDC) and manufacturer’s representative, determine and evaluate possible flooring selections to ensure UND design standards are met
  • Independently or in conjunction with PDC, determine flooring layout and pattern using UND-approved design standards
  • In conjunction with UND supply manager, order and stock correct materials for work orders and projects in accordance with procurement guidelines
  • Before removal and installation, determine asbestos content of material through research of existing database, collect samples as necessary and send them to a laboratory for analysis
  • Prepare for installation of new flooring by cutting/filing/sanding material to size, installing plywood underlayment, applying floor leveling materials and adhesives, etc.
  • Remove and install existing floor coverings as required, utilizing proper tools of the trade and recommended materials • Other duties, as assigned
  • Coordination of Flooring Installation and Removal
  • Serve as primary contact for flooring projects and work with other trades and project managers to meet established deadlines
  • Communicate project status and timelines with maintenance trades and department contacts
  • Follow requirements of flooring contract and inspect work of contractors to determine it meets UND guidelines
  • Load and deliver materials to contractors as necessary 
  • Clerical Duties
  • Sign and submit invoices from contractors after reviewing for accuracy
  • Prepare estimates for labor and materials used on projects/jobs
  • Create purchase requisitions and other forms for both flooring material and contractor installation service 
  • Basic Carpentry
  • Construct wood and steel stud walls, ceilings and floors
  • Install welded frame, knockdown and wood windows/doors
  • Perform minor concrete repairs
  • Install/repair residential and laboratory cabinets and countertops; install sinks, faucets and drains
  • Manufacture/assemble benches and shelving
  • Install solid-surface window sills and laminated counter tops
  • Make and install millwork for projects • Measure, estimate, assemble and install acoustical ceiling grid and panels
  • Install lever handles, mortise/cylindrical locks, panic device hardware and door closers for all mechanical and electronic door access (EDA) locks
  • Research and purchase materials using UND purchasing/procurement procedures
  • Coordinate on projects with other facilities trades
  • Install brick and concrete blocks; pour concrete floors/foundations and saw concrete with masonry saw
  • Grind concrete to remove safety issues
  • Install and repair various types of siding made of metal, vinyl, wood
  • Remove walls, ceilings and concrete floors using demolition equipment
  • Clean-up and dispose of demolished materials 

Required Competencies

  • Interact, communicate and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and co-workers
  • Work independently and as a team and complete necessary training for this job classification
  • Comprehend and follow directions as well as use sound decision-making skills
  • Understand, speak, read and write English well enough to perform the functions of the position; including reading and communicating in regards to work orders, safety instructions
  • Withstand long periods of lifting, pulling, tugging, climbing, kneeling, working with hands overhead, without restrictions
  • Work in buildings containing asbestos materials

Minimum Requirements

  • Previous flooring experience in preparation and installation using tools, materials, methods, and practices of the trade
  • Basic knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, and use of tools for the carpentry trade
  • Basic computer use; Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with UND campus and buildings
  • Experience with FAMIS, facilities management software
  • Asbestos certification (must provide documentation)
  • Operate scissor, fork, and boom lifts as well as tele-handler
  • Minimum 1year work experience as a carpenter/helper or the completion of a carpentry course from an accredited technical school
