Salary/Position Classification

  • $49,700 annual, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to provide information and services to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who require military financial assistance in order to attend the University of North Dakota. This position is responsible to maintain compliance with Federal, State and University policies and regulations governing eligibility and disbursement of educational financial aid. This role is key in serving as a resource to military-affiliated students, faculty, and staff at the institution.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Veteran's Educational Benefits Program Administration
    • Certify student eligibility and enrollment for Veterans Educational Benefits with the U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs (VA). Work with VA claims examiners to answer questions and ensure correct information.
    • Monitor student enrollment and educational success as outlined in VA regulations.
    • Submit academic status updates to the VA on a timely basis.
    • Collaborate with appropriate personnel to resolve difficult issues pertaining to student benefits.
    • Maintains current knowledge of VA certification regulations for veterans’ educational benefits programs. Compile and maintain files reflecting VA documentation and certifications.
    • Assist in implementing VA policies/regulations.
    • Prepare VA forms for submission.
    • Attend annual Certifying Official Training and other professional development activities as appropriate.
    • Participate in annual audits/compliance inspections.
    • Assist with VA work-study program to include training, submitting work hours to the VA, supervising when Asst Director is out of the office, etc. 
  • Provide Direct Assistance to Military Students
    • Provide guidance to active duty, guard/reserve, veterans, and dependents regarding: the application process, regulations, deadlines, supporting documents, payment processes, verifications, and eligible programs.
    • Communicate military benefit approval or denial decisions to students in a timely manner.
    • Act as a resource when applicants and/or other service professionals have specific questions concerning military benefits programs.
    • Explain services provided by other University offices and refer as appropriate.
    • Explain VA policies/procedures and how they impact students financially and academically.
    • Assist with student employment tasks of the department to include office programming or events oversight, direction, and guidance. 
  • Professional Representation of Veteran & Military Services
    • Facilitate access to military educational benefits information by serving as a resource to University, community, and regional entities.
    • Serves on professional University committees as assigned.
    • Contribute specific and general program data for compilation of required reports. Encourage and maintain professional relationship with Department of Veteran Affairs Regional Processing Centers. Assist with department programs and events.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Two years' work experience
  • Experience with or part of military-affiliated population (Veteran, active Duty, Dependent (Child or Spouse))
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, TEAMS and Zoom
  • Experience with data entry and analysis.
  • Must not be in default on federal student loans, due to gaining access to federal databases
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Service in the US military
  • Experience administering military education benefits
  • Two years working in customer service
  • Experience with the following computer systems: VA Enrollment Manager, Perceptive Content, PeopleSoft
  • Experience with state and federal tuition assistance programs
  • Experience with the North Dakota Century Code
