Student Feature Writer

  • $17.00 hourly, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 5-10 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite.

Purpose of Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.

The School of Graduate Studies is hiring a student feature writer to craft 1-3 compelling human-interest stories per week, highlighting the experiences, achievements, and perspectives of graduate students as well as graduate programs’ events. This position is ideal for a student who is passionate about storytelling and giving voice to diverse student journeys and experiences. This position will work closely with and be mentored by the UND Communications team, under the direction of the Communications Director and the School of Graduate Studies Interim Dean.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Research, report, and write 1-3 original stories per week that spotlight individual graduate students or graduate program/event.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews and background research to develop rich, narrative-driven features.
  • Collaborate with the Graduate School and the UND Communications team to identify potential story subjects aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Deliver polished, publication-ready drafts that reflect strong narrative structure and journalistic integrity.
  • Respond to editorial feedback and revise content as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Competencies

  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, especially in feature or profile formats
  • Excellent interviewing techniques
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent output
  • Enthusiastic about higher education and student-focused narratives

Minimum Requirements

  • At least one year working in a team environment
  • Demonstrated excellent writing ability; samples of academic and non-academic writing are required
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not support visa sponsorship for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrollment in journalism, communication or related field
  • Experience writing professional-level articles or other written works for the University
