Purpose of Position

This position is funded by a grant from the Mandan Hidatsa and Arikara Nation and requires reauthorization annually. The primary responsibility of the MHA Mentor is to identify Mandan Hidatsa and Arikara (MHA) members and assist with their higher education and/or vocational training, review individual academic records and provide academic advisement for prospective students, initiate an assessment of educational background and develop an individual educational plan, develop individual relationships with MHA participants at their respective locations, guide and encourage each mentee to empower to their highest potential; the mentors will serve as the advocates for career advancement, provide monitoring, tracking and reporting of mentor activities regarding participants and program progress, and, assist with the goals and objectives of the MHA Education Pathways program. This position requires an on campus presence in Grand Forks, ND.

Some travel is required, and evening hours may be required. This position is funded with a grant from MHA until September 30, 2024.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • 40% - Identify & Recruit Students for the MHA Education Pathways Program
    • Recruit students through advertisements, personal interviews, radio and other media, contact with tribal entities including Tribal Colleges and high schools
    • Assist in development of recruitment plans and materials
    • Complete MHA Enrollment forms, including Student Agreement
    • Maintain student file and input information into student record system
    • Travel to locations across North Dakota for recruitment
    • Other duties as assigned 
  • 40% - Develop & Foster Mentor Relationship with MHA Students at Respective Locations
    • Develop a trusting, caring relationship with MHA students at respective locations; maintain ongoing student contact and interaction
    • Assess academic readiness and possible barriers
    • Develop an Educational Care Plan with student and determine support services needed. Assist with needed services
    • Provide academic and personal advice/counsel
    • Assist with financial aid applications as well as all documents needed to facilitate academic readiness and success
    • Monitor and evaluate student progress, and record academic progress and advising notes within student record system and personal files
    • Assist students with various support services and secure tutorial assistance, as needed
    • Collaborate with other MHA Mentors to assist students with identified barriers/academic needs and develop strategies to address identified needs
    • Other duties as assigned 
  • 10% - Guide & Encourage Students to Achieve Academic Success & Employment in Chosen Field
    • Develop self-esteem building and empowerment strategies for students, i.e. speakers, networking opportunities with role models
    • Participate in professional development seminars and Team Building sessions to develop strategies for student success/personal development
    • Build and maintain student support network with high schools, tribal colleges, state institutions and vocational education institutions across the state
    • Other duties as assigned
  • 10% - Provide Monitoring, Tracking & Reporting of Mentor Activities
    • Responsible to record all support services provided within student files
    • Responsible for written monthly, quarterly and annual reports
    • Attend monthly staff meetings (in person or electronically), submit monthly staff reports
    • Other duties as assigned 

Required Competencies

  • Working knowledge of American Indian culture, sociological and psychosocial behavior
  • Knowledge of education institutions in ND.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication and computer skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products
  • Demonstrated knowledge of education and vocational institutions/demonstrated experience working with higher education

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Social Science or related field
  • 1 year experience recruiting American Indian Students
  • 1 year experience providing retention services for American Indian students
  • 1 year experience working with American Indian populations, American Indian culture and/or sociological and psychosocial behaviors
  • Ability to travel frequently and work occasional evening hours
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education, Guidance and Counseling or related field
  • 5+ years working with American Indians and American Indian communities or American Indian Tribal Nations
  • Prior experience working on grant-funded projects
  • Experience in development of education plans
