Purpose of Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs functions of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care on assigned patients under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor. The MLT involves the patient and significant other(s) in the patient’s health restoration, promotion, and maintenance. The MLT is responsible for performing according to established standards of laboratory practice and the University of North Dakota (UND), UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and the Center for Family Medicine policies/procedures. The MLT utilizes established lines of authority and communication to provide care to patients.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Responsible for the collection, preparation, processing and reporting of patients laboratory tests.
  • Process specimens for providers in a timely manner.
  • Keep accurate documentation of tests and results as well as all documentation required by our accrediting organization(s).
  • Revise and update procedural manuals.
  • Perform technical laboratory tests in the areas of chemistry, hematology, serology, bacteriology and urinalysis.
  • Evaluate results of quality control procedures: implement corrective action when indicated and document actions.
  • Conduct performance checks, calibrate instruments and perform quality control testing to assure reliability of testing results.
  • Maintain CPR certification and knowledge of emergency codes and procedures.  

Required Competencies

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work closely with faculty and resident physicians.
  • Must be able to work with patients and the public in a professional, confidential, and calm fashion.
  • Computer entry experience, familiarity with general office machines, attention to detail.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and be able to motivate other personnel.
  • Must promote a team environment.
  • Must be willing to learn about and become proficient with EKG, audiogram and pulmonary function test.

Minimum Requirements

  • A.S. degree in Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • Minimum of a MLT licensure in the State of North Dakota or eligibility for licensure.
  • Two years medical laboratory technician experience.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years medical laboratory experience.
