Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of the Education Specialist is to support the department and its faculty in order to maintain delivery of quality educational experiences to many students in different program paths. The Education Specialist position is vital for assisting with and/or managing admissions, assessment, administrative, and advising processes throughout the department, all of which are imperative for maintaining program accreditations and positive outcomes. The position also serves a vital role to assist in instruction and/evaluation of departmental students.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Department of MLS Histotechnology (HT) program support team
    • Manage HT program inquiries including providing accurate and prompt responses, monitoring and following-up, and performing transcript reviews
    • Coordinate and monitor HT program application processes
    • Manage required HT program student documentation related to health records, background checks, and required trainings
    • Assist with evaluation of general laboratory (not HT-specific) course components
    • Assist with HT instructional and curricular projects
    • Manage HT program website and program pages 

  • Provide instructional, laboratory, and curricular support for laboratory science coursework
    • Assist with preparation, in-lab delivery, student support, and evaluation of MLS student labs
    • Assist in the instruction and evaluation of theory coursework
    • Assist with development and implementation of curricular and programmatic initiatives 

  • Manage Department of MLS administrative services
    • Serve as initial departmental contact for general inquiries, prospective and current student communications, and administrative processes
    • Organize and maintain course section information for various program routes
    • Coordinate departmental advisor assignments and approvals for graduation
    • Monitor and troubleshoot student application, admission, and registration status/issues, and communicate status to applicable advisor(s)/coordinator(s)
    • Assist with mail services for the department
    • Create and maintain departmental documents, forms, handbooks, meeting agendas and minutes, and/or student rosters  

  • Assist in the coordination of admissions and assessment processes for Department of MLS program routes
    • Manage collection, preparation, and review of admissions and assessment data for various departmental program routes
    • Assist with development and distribution of program applications and assessment surveys
    • Develop and/or maintain essential records and documents related to student recruitment and retention, tracking of departmental goals, and other initiatives (ex. strategic plan)  

  • Participate in other education-related responsibilities
    • Assist with various tasks related to NAACLS accreditation
    • Assist with promotional documents, marketing ideas, and recruitment strategies/activities both on and off campus
    • Serve as a member of various Department of MLS committees
    • Assist with alumni and donor outreach initiatives

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology) or the equivalent
  • Six months of related clinical experience as a MLS (CLS/MT)
  • Certification (ASCP preferred) as MLS, CLS, or MT
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching or training students or employees
  • Experience with educational technologies and/or software (ex. learning management system, survey software, etc.)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
  • Experience communicating through various formats including face-to-face, email, virtual (ex. via Zoom)
