  • $39,500 - $41,500 (10 month annually) Annual, Exempt

Purpose of Position

Provide career, academic, and guidance counseling services to students in grades 6 through 12 in classroom and small group settings. Advise and instruct participants in developing strategies for classroom success, exploring options for future career and educational opportunities, assist in the completion of college admissions forms and federal financial aid applications, taking students on college tours, conducting career exploration using standardized assessments, and advising related to transition issues. This position is located in Grand Forks and serves students in classroom settings in northwest Minnesota. This is a 10-month position which runs from August 1 to May 31. 

August 1, 2025 is the anticipated start date for this position but can be earlier if interested and available.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify and select 300 (or number as directed by Director) qualified participants from a minimum of three target schools, and provide assistance in completing grades 6 through 12.
  • Coordination of agency and community resources in conjunction with career and academic counseling and referrals when appropriate to human/social service agencies. 
  • Act as a liaison and information source to to further participant knowledge concerning secondary and post-secondary expectations and procedures. Provide academic, career, personal, and financial group/individual/peer counseling to participants and organize mentoring activities at appropriate levels. Provide parental workshops on appropriate topics. 
  • Identify, select, and serve a group of 15 6-8 grade students from a minimum of one target school to receive more intensive services in all areas. 
  • Maintain accurate student and program records. Participate in opportunities for staff evaluation, growth, and development.

Required Competencies

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement workshops in the areas of career exploration, financial aid, and areas enhancing academic success.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent, reliable schedule.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team and independently to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and drive for extended periods of time.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, or related field. May 2025 graduates will be considered.
  • Experience in teaching/counseling in group and/or classroom presentations.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate motor vehicles provided through state motor pool.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, or related field.
  • Experience in teaching/counseling Talent Search related topics in group and/or classroom presentations with students grades 6-12.
  • Ability to network with public school personnel.
  • Experience with TRIO programs.
  • Background/experience with low-income, potential first generation college populations.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
