Salary/Position Classification

  • $44,000 - $50,000+ Dependent on Experience, Annual, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite at UND Grand Forks, ND campus

Purpose of Position

This position has direct responsibilities for coordinating the day-to-day operations of fitness activity areas, fitness/exercise programs & services (group exercise, personal training, assessments), and fitness education programs (certifications, CPR/AED/FA). Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: delivering excellent customer service, ensuring appropriate coverage of programs and staffed areas during operating hours, management of assigned fitness areas (weight/cardio areas, studios), instructing/leading exercise classes/programs, and supervision (hire, train, develop, and review) of assigned part-time employees. This position also serves as a part of the Wellness & Health Promotion Leadership team and other assigned committees and teams.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage fitness activity areas.
    • Coordinate assigned fitness activity areas including weight floor, cardio/circuit deck, studios.
    • Manage operations of fitness activity areas, including up-keep of amenities/equipment and enforcement of member policies to ensure a safe and cooperative community of respect.
    • Ensure all areas are staffed appropriately during all hours of operation, providing direct coverage as needed.
    • Create a welcoming, clean, and safe operation, by ensuring cleaning and safety inspection tasks are conducted with appropriate frequency.
    • Ensure areas are open on time and appropriately secured at the conclusion of daily operating hours.
    • Administer excellent communication to create a professional and customer-centric environment.
    • Ensure area processes are delivered consistently including check-out of equipment, scanning in users, managing user accounts for programs/services.
    • Assist with management of related fitness equipment (inventory, purchasing, maintenance requests, etc.)
    • Create, manage, and analyze reports for participant access, usage, and other related metrics, as needed.
  • Coordinate and manage fitness programs and services.
    • Plan, develop, and implement effective and high-quality fitness programs and services.
    • Ensure programs are designed with purpose and delivered in a professional manner, following expected guidelines and established standards of practice.
    • Serve as the primary contact and respondent for member relations, concerns, and feedback regarding fitness programs and services.
    • Manage programs/services administration including roster management, record maintenance, securing facilities, gathering data and reports, submitting for approvals, etc.
    • Engage in program promotion and participant recruitment activities.
    • Manage program supplies/equipment (purchase, replace, inventory).
    • Ensure all programs and services are staffed appropriately, providing direct instruction or facilitation as needed.
  • Coordinate and manage fitness education/CPR & First Aid programs
    • Plan, develop, and implement effective and high-quality fitness education/CPR & First Aid programs.
    • Ensure programs are designed with purpose and delivered in a professional manner, following expected guidelines and established standards of practice.
    • Serve as the primary contact and respondent for member relations, concerns, and feedback regarding fitness education and CPR & First Aid programs.
    • Manage program administration including roster management, record maintenance, securing facilities, gathering data and reports, submitting for approvals, etc.
    • Manage program supplies/equipment (purchase, replace, inventory).
    • Ensure all programs and services are staffed appropriately, providing direct instruction or facilitation as needed.
    • Obtain and maintain professional certification in CPR/AED/FA through American Heart Association.
  • Staff Supervision
    • Hire, train, schedule and evaluate all assigned student staff positions.
    • Develop and update training manuals to ensure that employees are knowledgeable of the Wellness Center and area-specific policies and procedures before scheduling them to work.
    • Meet with staff monthly or as needed to ensure excellent communication and training.
    • As needed, evaluate staff in respective areas using Job Performance Appraisals and Behavior Logs.
    • Establish and maintain an up-to-date, continuous training and education plan for all assigned student staff.
    • Process payroll and leave requests for all assigned staff in a timely and efficient manner.
    • Assist with implementation of department processes related to student staff development, recruitment, interviewing and selection, orientation, training, evaluation, reward and recognition programs.
    • Provide effective leadership, management, mentoring, and empowerment for all personnel.
    • Ensure staff interact and model department team values.
  • Fiscal Management
    • Develop and manage annual budgets for all assigned operational/program areas.
    • Ensure good stewardship of finances by monitoring expenses and purchases.
    • Abide by all required department and University purchasing policies.
    • Complete required financial trainings.
    • Identify and report any instances of suspected fraud or financial errors.
  • Work Safely - Follow safety rules and procedures as identified by the department and University.
    • Conduct safety inspections, eliminate hazards, train employees about safety, and enforce safety rules.
    • Assist in identifying unsafe working conditions, correcting them, and or reporting them via appropriate forms and protocol.
    • Participate in required safety/operational tasks including monthly safety audits, etc
  • Administration, Leadership, Customer Service and Teamwork
    • Be familiar with, communicate, and apply all department/division/institutional policies and procedures.
    • Model professional and ethical behavior, utilizing department team values.
    • Assist with department, division, and/or institutional programs and initiatives.
    • Serve on various campus committees and work groups as requested.
    • Use excellent interpersonal skills and abilities to build and maintain positive working relationships within the department, University, and community.
    • Follow Marketing & Creative Services processes for marketing of programs and services.
    • Adhere to department team norms to enhance a positive working team culture.
    • Actively participate in assigned leadership teams, department/division meetings, retreats, and staff development activities.
    • Support development and execution of strategic and assessment plans.
    • Maintain and track information for annual and other department and/or University reports.
    • Provide excellent customer service to all visitors, students, staff, and faculty.
    • Maintain professional knowledge required of the position.
    • Contribute to the creation of an inclusive work environment by treating others with dignity and respect.
    • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree: Exercise Science, Physical Recreation, Kinesiology, Fitness/Wellness, or related field.
  • One year of customer service experience, preferably in a sales, membership, fitness, recreation, or wellness-related environment.
  • Able to obtain national fitness certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Certification of First Aid, CPR, and AED or be able to obtain within 2 months of hire
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree: Exercise Science, Physical Recreation, Kinesiology, Fitness/Wellness, or related field
  • One or more years' supervisory experience
  • Experience in leading group exercise classes, personal training, or wellness programs
  • Experience working in a higher education environment
