Purpose of Position

The University of North Dakota is seeking adynamic Environmental Compliance Manager to join our team. As part of the Office of Safety, this position plays a crucial role in ensuring that UND upholds the highest standards of environmental responsibility.

Reporting to the Director for Safety, the Environmental Compliance Manager will be responsible for overseeing and managing the university's environmental programs, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and laws. This includes developing and implementing comprehensive policies and procedures for the management of hazardous materials, waste disposal, air emissions, and other environmental concerns.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the university's sustainability efforts. You will collaborate with various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external agencies, to promote environmental awareness and implement best practices across campus operations.

To excel in this position, you will need a strong background in environmental compliance, regulatory affairs, and hazardous materials management. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as you will be tasked with providing training, guidance, and support to the UND community on environmental matters.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of an environmental compliance program at the University, including updating and reviewing of the environmental policies.
  • Manage the universities regulated waste, chemical reduction and recycling programs.
  • Provide training on various Environmental and Hazardous waste topics.

Required Competencies

  • Ability to gather field data, analyze problems, form conclusions, and develop solutions consistent with university policy and applicable regulations. Selects the most practicable and economically feasible solution and services as a team member and/or directs the accomplishment of the preferred solution.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills: ability to use technical equipment associated with environmental and chemical safety program operations: ability to research new technologies and their related safety issues, safe operation of motor vehicles.’

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental law/science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Chemistry, Industrial technology/Hygiene or other directly related field.
  • 5 years related experience in Environmental Management
  • 3 years related experience in Hazardous waste, materials disposal and management
  • Experience with ISO 14001 Environmental management systems.
  • Experience with EPA, NDDEQ or other State environmental regulations.
  • Experience supervising professional staff
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Master Safety Professional (MSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
  • ISO 9001 Quality Management System or ISO 14001 Environmental management systems Certification.
  • Experience with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Comprehensive Environmental Repose, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) and Clean Air Act.
