Purpose of Position

UIT PMO manages projects sponsored by UND IT and other departments requiring UIT to manage their initiatives. A factor contributing to a successful project is ensuring that requirements are gathered and defined to start a project.

The Business Analyst role is critical in ensuring the project is defined. The position will elicit, analyze, specify, and validate the business needs of impacted groups, be they customers or end users. This includes interviewing stakeholders and gathering and compiling user requirements to understand the technology solutions they need.

The Business Analyst will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help the business make good technology decisions. The role will serve as a thought leader for technical business processes, developing systems prototypes that promote increased efficiency and productivity on multiple levels.

Duties & Responsibilities

70% - Perform Business Analyst Tasks in Projects as Assigned 

  • Collaborate with project sponsors to determine project scope and vision.
  • Identify impacted groups and conduct stakeholder analysis.
  • Gather user requirements via workshops, questionnaires, surveys, site visits, workflow storyboards, use cases, scenarios, and other methods. Author and update internal and external documentation and formally initiate and deliver requirements and documentation.
  • Identify and establish the scope and parameters of requirements analysis on a project-by-project basis to define project impact, outcome criteria, and metrics.
  • Work with stakeholders and the project team to prioritize collected requirements.
  • Research, review, and analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of existing requirements-gathering processes and develop strategies for enhancing or further leveraging these processes.
  • Perform QA testing in projects where assistance is needed.
  • Participate in the QA of purchased solutions to ensure features and functions have been enabled and optimized.
  • Participate in the selection of any requirements documentation software solutions that the organization may opt to use. 

15% - Perform Operational Management Tasks 

  • Analyze and verify requirements for completeness, consistency, comprehensibility, feasibility, and conformity to standards.
  • Develop and utilize standard templates to write requirements specifications accurately and concisely.
  • Translate conceptual user requirements into functional requirements in a clear manner that is comprehensible to developers/project teams.
  • Where applicable, develop prototypes of interfaces and attributes based on user requirements.
  • Create process models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to guide developers and/or the project team. 

15% - Provide Assistance with the Activities of UIT PMO and UIT in General 

  • As part of a team, assist with the collection and analysis of project metrics to refine processes, improve methods, report overall achievements, and improve future estimation efforts.
  • Assist management in driving awareness of the importance of properly gathering requirements when implementing projects.
  • Assist in building the capability within UIT by conducting coaching and developing templates and other applicable methods.
  • Participate in professional development to stay current with industry knowledge and best practices; attend business analysis-related conferences and training as appropriate and time allows.
  • Other duties as assigned or approved by the supervisor or CIO. 

Required Competencies

  • Strong organizational skills to effectively manage time and multiple projects at once.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to communicate with a broad range of constituencies across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and project management software skills, including planning, organizing, and managing resources
  • Ability to create systematic and consistent requirements specifications in both technical and user-friendly language
  • Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to be collaborative and build consensus.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or other related field.
  • Five years of experience as a business analyst.
  • Experience in business and technical requirements analysis, elicitation, modeling, verification, and methodology development.
  • Experience overseeing the design, development, and implementation of software and hardware solutions, systems, or products.
  • Experience in analytics and system development.
  • Experience with application development and software development life cycle concepts
  • Experience managing projects and user testing.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft products, including MS Visio.
  • Experience in database management
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA) or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) or willingness to work toward certification.
  • High proficiency in technical writing
  • Experience working in higher education.
