Purpose of Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.

The mission of RIAS (Research Institute for Autonomous Systems) is to create new autonomous systems through multidisciplinary research and lead development of world-changing autonomous policies, with the goal of driving a vibrant, diverse and sustainable economy consistent with ethical and legal standards.


RIAS is built upon five focus areas: autonomous platforms, applications, data supply chain, cybersecurity, and policy.
This opportunity will allow the student to be a part of the RIAS team and assist in the development of simulation modules and test algorithms related to autonomous systems, develop and test machine learning modules, use military based TAK, and so much more.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Developing simulation models and test algorithms related to autonomous systems
  • Developing and testing machine learning models to detect and follow objects
  • Using military based Tactical Awareness kit (TAK) applications including ATAK, WinTAK, CivTAK, and VTak
  • Operating and maintaining RIAS Research lab computers
  • Integrating, testing, and deploying hardware/tech/tools related to autonomous systems
  • Writing reports, tracking, and documenting progress
  • Writing of proposals for research grants

Required Competencies

  • Knowledge about machine learning frameworks and/or Robotic Operating Systems
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail
  • Requires minimal direct supervision to start, work, complete, and report on task and project status

Minimum Requirements

  • Work Study Students - must have accepted a Federal Work Study Award for the relevant term
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Python and/or C++ for programming
  • Knowledge about machine learning frameworks and/or Robotic Operating Systems
