Animal Lab Technician

Salary/Position Classification

  • $36,600 - $40,000 Annual, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

This position will provide laboratory-specific assistance required for the function and maintenance of the Nookala laboratory. Such assistance includes general and technical support in biomedical research, animal husbandry, and laboratory compliance bookkeeping.

Duties & Responsibilities

Animal Care and Support

  • Daily monitoring, handling, and husbandry of mouse colony in compliance with UND IACUC guidelines and approved protocols - Maintain breeding colony, conduct genotyping procedures, such as ear punching, DNA extraction, and PCR analysis, to maintain accurate records of the animal's genetic background
  • When necessary, tail clips or ear punches will be shipped to external service provide to confirm the genotypes
  • Maintain detailed records of all samples hipped for genotyping including animal IDs, and update the records with genotyping results received from the service provider
  • Work closely with the research team to determine the total number of male and female mice required for each experimental group and the time point in the study for each genotype and set up breeders accordingly
  • Maintain detailed logs and documentation related to animal care, mouse colony, procedures, and study parameters  

Perform and assist with animal preparations

  • Perform and assist with the preparation for oral gavage, infections, and interventions
  • Provide hands-on support during the conduct of mouse experiments, monitoring survival, recording lesions, body weight, temperature during the gavage or infection period
  • Work with the team for the sample collection, processing, aliquoting, and storage of tissues and samples collected from animals at different time points
  • Track individual animal records, including health status, treatment regimens, and experimental data
  • Ensure proper storage, inventory, and handling of all animal-related supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals 

Laboratory Support

  • Prepare the necessary buffers, reagents, and other laboratory solutions required for the experiments
  • Process and prepare tissue samples for microscopy, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, and histology
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and submission of samples to the core facilities or service providers
  • Coordinate with the core facilities to ensure processing of samples and timely delivery of results
  • Responsible for autoclaving for safe and proper disposal of all biological materials and lab waste generated during the experiments
  • Maintain a detailed log of their duties and activities related to the projects  

Required Competencies

  • Must be able to work independently
  • Proficient in proper handling, restraint, and care of laboratory mice
  • Committed to maintaining a safe and compliant work environment
  • Ability to prepare clear, well-formatted written report, protocols, and documentation
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates degree in biological sciences related field
  • One year of hands-on experience working with mice
  • Experience in performing mouse ear tagging, common experimental procedures in mice such as oral gavage, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, and submandibular bleeds
  • Experience creating, formatting, and organizing data in spreadsheets for mouse colony database
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in neuroscience, chemistry, medical laboratory science, biochemistry, biology or related field
