Purpose of Position

Core advisors shape the culture of advising at UND. They provide academic advising for transfer students, students in transition between colleges, and majors within colleges as needed. Core advisors also provide professional development and training for academic advisors across campus, and are responsible for the evaluation and assessment of advising. They also have a part in ensuring that colleges' and the university's recruitment and retention goals are met.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Academic Advising Leadership
    • Provide academic advising expertise when needed
    • Provide development and support for advisors across campus
    • Help to problem solve difficult student issues
    • Provide support for faculty and staff with larger advising/curriculum process questions
    • Provide support for advising technology tools (Civitas, Transfer Portal)
    • Keep up to date and relay information on curriculum changes across campus
    • Collaborate with UND leadership, College Deans or Associate Deans on complex problems when needed 
  • UND Retention Efforts
    • Participate in University retention efforts (non-enrolled lists, etc)
    • Attend new student orientation and commencement (attend 2 commencement ceremonies per year)
    • Work with ACA team to reduce barriers to student success
    • Help students with drop in academic advising questions/concerns
    • Effectively communicate campus policies, resources, and services to advisors/students
    • Assist with the first-year student advisement and registration process 
  • Academic College Support
    • Participate in college retention efforts
    • Identify and work to remove barriers for students in the college
    • Work closely with admissions to respond to prospective student visits and other initiatives
    • Represent college at admissions and current student events when needed
    • Meet regularly with departmental contacts and leadership
    • Support academic advisors in the college by connecting them with resources, fielding questions, and coordinating training opportunities 
  • Projects/Initiatives/Professional Development/Other Duties 
    • Provide professional development training for undergraduate advisors as needed
    • Participate in professional development opportunities both on campus and off campus
    • Other duties as assigned (e.g., staff senate, committees, special projects) 
  • Supervision
    • Supervise seven full-time employees
    • Handle complex situations with direct reports
    • Support and provide regular feedback to direct reports

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field
  • One year of experience in academic advising
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in any field
  • 3+ years of experience in higher education
