Salary/Position Classification

  • $48,000+ annual, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

This UAS Associate position will work with Flight Operations and fulfills the need for the increased demand for instructors for Avit 126, 238, 337, 419 and 438. Assist UAS flight operations in the areas: Student instruction, evaluation, lesson plan development and records management General support functions related to: Flight operations, systems maintenance, testing and evaluation. In addition, this position provides UAS program robustness through cross training and generalized support for academic instructors.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Chair of the UAS Program or designee.

Duties & Responsibilities

  •  UAS Flight Instructor:
    • Conduct Ground, Flight and FTD instruction.
    • Follow prescribed curriculum, maintain student records.
    • Maintain support for both ScanEagle and sUAS aircraft.
    • Monitor and evaluate student checks.
    • Maintain superior training standards.
    • Maintain currency in UAS aircraft systems.
    • Assist in safely conducting UAS flight operations adhering to SMS principles, processes, and procedures. 
  •  Course Content Development:
    • Certify flight records.
    • Assist with development of undergraduate lesson content and course development.
    • Develop and incorporate instructional aids.
    • Assist in fleet inspections, maintenance and record keeping.
    • Assist in fleet management and inventory. 
  •  UAS Operations Liaison:
    • Between flight operations management and instructor/students.
    • Coordinate ground academics and flight training within JDOSAS.
    • Promoting a positive safety culture throughout UAS Program. 
  •  Perform other duties as assigned by Assistant Chair of the UAS Program or designee:
    • Generally consists of, but not limited to the following:
      • Site set up for operations for all UAS aircraft (e.g. ScanEagle, Daedelus, sUAS)
      • Develop, monitor, and maintain policies and procedures.
      • Maintain adequate amount of content of contact time.
      • Recommend Improvements for training and safety.
    • Assist in research:
      • Visual and Electronic observers.
      • Flight test procedures.
      • Safety of flight.
      • Safety risk assessments.
      • Support for operations.
    • Assist in promotion of UAS program - outreach and customer service.
    • Supervisor student staff as needed. 

Required Competencies

  • Motivated self-starter with ability to perform without direct supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to make sound decisions concerning training problems
  • Good team building skills.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation.
  • Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating.
  • ScanEagle UAS experience.
  • Experience working with UAS Aircraft
  • Minimum of 20 hours logged experience working with UAS simulators.
  • Part 107 Remote Pilot Operator.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in UAS Operations.
  • Commercial Certificate with Instrument rating.
  • FAA Certified Flight Instructor.
  • Satisfactorily completed FAA Fundamentals of Instruction Exam.
  • MQ1/MQ9 (actual/simulated) UAS experience.
  • Computer networking experience.
  • Experience in photogrammetry software.
