Purpose of Position

The teacher assistant provides support to the ECE Teacher in the care and active supervision of children 18 months to age 12. Furthermore, the teacher assistant in the float position will act as a substitute teacher, covering teachers' personal/medical leave.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher in maintaining a developmentally appropriate classroom, including all children regardless of their abilities. 
  • Assist and/or substitute for the classroom teacher, providing developmentally appropriate educational experiences, including all children regardless of ability. 
  • Assist the classroom teacher in maintaining the health and safety of the environment and the children. 
  • Assist classroom teacher in effectively and respectfully working with families. 
  • Assist classroom teacher in welcoming UND Field experience students, student caregivers, volunteers, and foster grandparents.
  • Promote one’s personal and professional growth through continuing education, professional literature, and commitment to self-evaluation. 
  • Work effectively, respectfully, & professionally with a team of colleagues (Teamwork).
  • Maintain professional/ethical conduct. 

Required Competencies

  • Computer literate
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood.
  • Upon being hired; must complete CPR/First Aid/AED Training & ND Growing Futures basic childcare course.

Minimum Requirements include at least one of the following: 

• 40 hours of professional Early Childhood professional development preparation including 10 hours of training in each North Dakota    Core Competency Area: Families/Communities, Program Planning/Evaluation, and Professional Development and Leadership (Must      be delivered by an Early Childhood agency such as: Head Start, Growing Futures or US Military)

OR
• One 3 credit college course directly applicable to one of the following ND Core Competency Areas.


In addition to the following:
• 1 year of work experience in Early Childhood Education
• Successful completion of a criminal history records check.
• Successful completion of the ND Department of Health & Human Services Criminal History Fingerprinting Background Check
• Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates in early childhood education or child development Certificate (CDA).
