Salary/Position Classification

  • $65,000-$68,000+ Dependent on Experience, Annual, Exempt

Purpose of Position

The position exists to support RIAS research across the array of topics that are organized within the five focus areas within the mission of the department. Given the activity in RIAS, support is needed in the following areas:
1. RIAS research execution
2. RIAS research leadership
3. RIAS business development and outreach
This position reports to the RIAS Executive Director

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Research Execution and Analysis
    • Conduct research tasks to reach milestones:
      • Perform literature reviews.
      • Formulating research hypotheses, developing experimental protocols, and planning research projects.
      • Conduct experiments in a laboratory or field setting.
      • Perform analysis to develop required tools, equations, etc.
      • Collect, process, and analyze data. f. Collect field data.
      • Perform simulations (system simulations, digital engineering, etc.).
    • Scientific writing:
      • Produce reports, presentations, etc., as required
      • Produce technical documents to satisfy project requirements.
      • Produce presentation materials to satisfy project requirements.
      • Produce presentation materials for conferences, workshops, etc. e. Produce manuscripts for publication in journals, conference proceedings, et.
    • Collaboration:
      • Working with other researchers, both within and across disciplines, to share expertise and advance research projects.
    • Comply with requirements:
      • Maintain compliance with all contract requirements
      • Maintain compliance in all relevant areas (conflict of interest, security, etc.)
    • Support Field Operations (as needed) to meet project goals and objectives.
  • Research Leadership
    • Lead projects, including serving as the Point of Contact (POC) for sponsors:
      • Organize research team, including establishing project management components (team meetings, quarterly reports, etc.).
      • Lead team meetings.
      • Serve as POC for sponsors.
    • Lead research teams, including ensuring that research/project products are completed as required:
      • Monitor progress towards accomplishment of milestones.
      • Lead production of project deliverables, including coordination of team member efforts to ensure that milestones are met.
    • Manage/ensure compliance associated with research efforts:
      • Work with contracting personnel to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
      • Work with compliance personnel to ensure compliance with all related areas (conflict of interest, security protocols, etc.).
    • Mentor and supervise research scientists, junior scientists and students/temp employees as needed 
  • Business Development and Outreach
    • Identifying potential funding sources and lead proposal development to secure funding.
    • Support RIAS business development by attending meetings and conferences.
    • Present research:
      • Present research at internal team meetings.
      • Present research at project meetings (e.g., with project sponsors and stakeholders).
    • Support RIAS outreach activities at conferences and community events as needed.
    • Support RIAS opportunity-development meetings. 

Required Competencies

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a science, engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years experience with research execution.
  • Experience leading projects and research teams.
  • Experience with proposal development.
  • Experience with data analysis and working with analysis tools to access and manipulate data/data sources. Data sources can be text or binary files, structured data files such as NetCDF or HDF files, etc.
  • Experience with visualization of data/results.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, Power Point and Word, or equivalent.
  • Export control compliance and federal clearances.
    • This position requires compliance with U.S. government export control laws and regulations. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and be a United States citizen who would be eligible (current or prior qualified) for DOD/USIC top secret security clearance. UND will not sponsor applicants for employment authorization for this position.   • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a science, engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years leading projects & research
  • 3 years of experience beyond a Master's degree with data analysis and processing
  • 3 years of experience beyond a Master's degree with production of reports
  • Experience with presentation of results
  • Experience with proposal development.
  • Experience working in academia.
  • Experience with autonomous systems.
  • Experience with augmented reality.
  • Experience with human factors/human machine design.
  • Experience with user studies.
