Salary/Position Classification

  • $48,000+, dependent on experience, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

The Department of Physics and Astrophysics is seeking a 12-month, post-doctoral research fellow to conduct research in experimental quantum optics. The initial appointment will be for one year and is full-time and benefitted, with potential for renewal for a second year, pending annual review of performance and continued availability of funding.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, assemble and perform quantum optics experiments with heralded single photons.
  • Characterize and maintain lasers, optical detectors and other laboratory equipment.
  • Implement models of photon propagation and non-linear optics using python.
  • Analyze results with PI and draft manuscripts for publication and proposals for external grants.
  • Present research at conferences.
  • Mentor junior team members.

Required Competencies

  • Familiarity with optical benchtop experiments, laser systems, and optical detectors
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Desire to solidify a research career in optics and establish and independent research
    direction

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in experimental quantum optics or related field
  • Demonstrated evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have research experience in at least one of the following topics (1) photon pair sources, (2) quantum key distribution, (3) non-linear frequency conversion, (4) fiber optics, (5) interferometry, (6) free-space optical communication
  • Research background in optics
  • Programming experience (python preferred, Fortran, LabView)
  • Experience with hardware control, hardware programming
  • Experience with CAD (Inventor, Solidworks), fabrication
