Purpose of Position

Personal trainers are responsible for designing and leading workouts that will help clients accomplish their fitness goals through positive encouragement, motivation, and fostering internal desire to improve in a safe, correct, and appropriate way.

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in fitness/wellness outreach programs as required. 
  • Keep detailed records of personal training participants. 
  • Assist with marketing of personal training/wellness programs. 
  • Perform fitness assessments and exercise prescription/program development. 
  • Maintain current certifications. 
  • Complete all cleaning and sanitation tasks as assigned to maintain a safe & healthy environment. 
  • Attend meetings/trainings as required. - (Essential)

Minimum Requirements

  • CERTIFIED

    • Have one of the following national recognized NCCA Accredited certifications: NSCA (CPT or CSCS), ACE (CPT, clinical exercise specialist, lifestyle and weight management consultant), or ACSM (HFI, CPT, or Exercise Specialist), NASM (CPT), NCSF (CPT), and NETA (CPT) to earn interview.
    • General working knowledge of all weight room and cardio deck equipment and ability to explain proper use to clients.
    • Ability to communicate with participants and provide motivation for continued participation in physical activity and healthy living.
    • Pursuit of further personal training certifications and maintenance of current certification through continuing education.
    • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds of weight.
    • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED, or ability to obtain within 2 weeks of hire. (Training provided by the Wellness Center at no cost for employees)

NONCERTIFIED

  • The 2.75 major GPA in the following course work or equivalent is required. Unofficial transcripts must be included with the application
  • Required (Completed or currently enrolled):
    • KIN 207 : Prevention, Care & Legal Issues for Injury
    • KIN 326: Fundamentals for Physical Conditioning
    • KIN 402 & 402L: Exercise Physiology & Lab
    • KIN 446: Exercise Testing & Prescription
    • N&D 240*: Fundamentals of Nutrition
    • KIN 375*:  Exercise & Weight Training Skills & Teach Techniques
    • KIN 376*: Essentials of Personal Training
    • *these courses are optional; however preference will be given to applicants that have these courses completed or in progress.

      • Doctor of Physical Therapy Students: Must be in professional year 2 of the program

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hold or be pursuing a major or minor in exercise science, recreation, nutrition or health-related field OR have experience in Personal Training and/or at least one certification, but pursuing a different primary career.
  • Previous experience as a Wellness & Health Promotion FLEX intern.
