Salary/Position Classification

  • $5,000-$10,000 contract, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 5-12 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to provide effective clinical teaching in the area of Family Law at the University of North Dakota School of Law.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Effective clinical teaching in the area of Family Law.
  • Prepare to teach your course, which includes preparing the syllabus, selecting and submitting for printing any unique printing materials, selecting books for student purchase, and preparing course materials and assessment. Syllabi include course descriptions, learning objectives, teaching policies, text and readings, and other policies and student deliverables.
  • Provide a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Adhere to all University and law school policies.
  • Track student attendance using tools provided, and refer students to the Administration if required for attendance and/or performance issues.
  • When appropriate, use the institution’s learning management system platforms (TWEN, BlackBoard, etc.) to post student assignments, syllabi, and other reference materials, and to communicate with students.
  • Read submitted student work and assessments and provide written comments to students in a timely manner to provide feedback on performance.
  • Meet with students during “office hours” to provide individualized direction and assessment of progress.
  • Ensure the proper number of teaching hours is completed, work with the Administration to schedule any “make up” classes for any cancelled classes.
  • Engage in case selection, litigation, and other advocacy to promote the clinic’s mission and goals.
  • Supervising clinic students in all aspects of the clinic’s work.
  • Complete a conflict check for any potential clients.
  • Ensure the students complete a conflict check verification form for all client matters.

  • Ability to teach in the curricular area of interest
  • Ability to work and collaborate in a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive setting

Minimum Requirements

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and a strong academic record
  • Licensed in North Dakota.
  • Be a North Dakota bar member in good standing.
  • 1 year post-J.D. work experience.
  • Experience in Family Law matters.
  • Prior enrollment and successful completion of Family Law Clinic I-IV.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience is desirable, but not essential. Must, however, demonstrate evidence of teaching potential.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
