Purpose of Position

COUN 532 Multicultural Counseling

Counseling and Counseling Psychology must fulfill accreditation and licensure requirements for multiple programs and emphasis track areas, including addiction counseling, clinical mental health counseling, rehabilitation counseling, and doctoral counseling psychology, and develop students’ knowledge, awareness, and skills to work with diverse populations in counseling contexts. This course will provide an overview of counseling theories and interventions relevant to American ethnic and non-ethnic minority clients, examining values, assumptions, and systemic power structures affecting diverse communities. Students will also learn to build cultural humility, self-awareness, and multicultural competencies essential for ethical counseling practice. An emphasis on social justice, intersectionality, and reflective engagement will also be explored. This is a 4-credit in-person course taught in the Fall term.

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or related field by August 2025.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching courses in multicultural counseling or related content areas.
  • Experience working with diverse, underserved, and/or marginalized populations in mental health or related settings.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision and supporting students in applying multicultural theory to practice.
  • Familiarity with APA and/or MPCAC accreditation standards and competencies.
