Purpose of Position

The University of North Dakota’s (UNDs) Department of Atmospheric Sciences is seeking up to two qualified applicants with an existing research portfolio to apply as a faculty member. The position may be tenure track or an offer of tenure may be made based on a candidate’s documented record of achievement and subject to approval from the Department, College, University, and the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. The anticipated start date is 16 August 2026, though an early start of 1 Jan 2026 is also possible. We welcome candidates and professionals from non-academic backgrounds. 

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences is part of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences at UND and offers degree programs leading to the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences. UND is a UCAR Member institution. Spring 2024 enrollments included 128 undergraduate students (70 minors and 58 majors), and 31 graduate students in these programs. Teaching and research is carried out by 13 faculty members; current areas of faculty expertise are listed at http://atmos.und.edu/Research/. Facilities include a 5-cm wavelength dual polarization Doppler weather radar, two instrumented ground research sites, and use of a Cessna Citation research aircraft in collaboration with a local research firm. Duties & Responsibilities

• The successful candidates will be responsible for, over 9 months:
  • Teaching up to 3 courses per year (2+1 or 1+2 schedule).
  • Conducting externally-funded independent research.
  • Providing service to the department, college, university, and national/international community, including academic advising.

Minimum Requirements

• A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, or a closely-related field.
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

• Subject matter expertise in atmospheric dynamics at any scale, aviation meteorology, cloud physics and atmospheric chemistry, mesoscale meteorology and severe storms, stratospheric research, social science, and/or atmospheric science applications involving machine learning or artificial intelligence. This expertise should be demonstrated through prior teaching assignments and/or published peer reviewed journal articles and books.
• Had a post-doctoral fellowship at a College/University or equivalent years of experience post PhD.
• Evidence of the ability to successfully obtain consistent external research funding.
• Leadership/mentorship, project management, and/or service experience.
