Laboratory Assistant - Deeded Body Program

Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to assist with the Deeded Body Program at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences in addition to the undergraduate mission which occurs in Columbia Hall where our secondary cadaver preparation room is located

Duties & Responsibilities

  •  Preservation (embalming) and storage of donors
    • Assistance with embalming when needed, adhering to basic embalming procedure
    • Making appropriate decisions beyond basic procedure to ensure donors are embalmed proficiently for teaching purposes (inquiry of assistance from Manager of Deeded Body Program if necessary)
    • Taking necessary steps once embalming is complete to ensure donors are properly prepared for storage before classroom use
    • Placement of donors in storage with inventory update as to location of donor 
  • Classroom and prep room maintenance
    • Assistance with the placement of donors in cremation cartons, cleaning of classroom tables, and placement of new donors in dissection tables
    • Assistance with the maintenance of the morgue (i.e., keeping morgue clean and orderly)
    • Assistance with the maintenance of classrooms (i.e., keeping labs supplied with cadaveric materials, etc.)
    • Assistance with maintaining lab specimens for classes including pro-sections
    • Maintaining a level of cooperativeness (i.e., misc. tasks as asked by staff or faculty) 
  • Donor preparation and transportation to crematorium
    • Assistance with preparation and transportation of donors to the crematorium
    • Validate accuracy of paperwork accompanying donors to the crematorium 
  • Perform duties pertaining to data management for Deeded Body Program
    • Assistance with receipts of inquiries
    • Assistance with communications with interested and registered donors
    • Assistance with assignment of registration numbers to donors and documentation of current donor location
    • Verification of accurate records of donor files in Versatile software system
    • Maintaining availability for necessary Deeded Body Program tasks in absence of Manager or full-time employee
    • Assistance with tasks involved in the triennial interment service

Required Competencies

  • Proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of biosafety procedures

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of a Human Anatomy Course receiving a passing grade
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Successful Completion of a Criminal History Background Check
