Clinic Nurse

Salary/Position Classification

• $58,800+ Annual, Dependent on Experience, Exempt
• Schedule:
  • Academic Year (August 16 - May 15): 40 hours per week
  • Summer (May 16 - August 15): 20 hours per week
• This position will work onsite at UND Grand Forks, ND campus

Purpose of Position

The clinic nurse collaborates with medical and psychiatric providers in evaluation and treatment of patients in person, electronically or via phone, within the nursing scope of practice. The nurse performs general nursing procedures, administers required immunizations and treatments, and provides education to enhance patient knowledge.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist provider in evaluation and treatment of patients:
  • Practice within professional, ethical, and legal parameters, maintaining strict patient confidentially 100% of time.
    • Provide nonjudgmental care and sensitivity regardless of race, gender or culturally diverse attitudes.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain accurate electronic health record (EHR), interview patients, record vital signs, review and update medication list and allergies.
  • Administer treatments and intravenous (IV) therapy as ordered by the medical provider.
  • Perform preliminary procedures for FAA/ATC, ROTC, GYN, and physical exams.
  • Prep patient for procedures, obtain appropriate signature on informed consent and ancillary surgical documents, provide appropriate pre and post procedure care and education.
  • Assist with surgical, casting, and splinting procedures.
  • Assist in referrals to other specialties as directed by medical providers. Arrange for emergent transfer to acute care setting and transfer of appropriate records for continuation of care, adhering to FERPA & HIPAA guidelines.
  • Utilize standing orders to administer treatments, medications, vaccinations and to order appropriate lab and x-ray studies.
  • Order T-Spot testing, per standing orders. Arrange Public Health follow-up of latent TB clients per medical provider order.
  • Prepare specimens for lab analysis, utilizing knowledge of blood borne pathogens and adhering to infection control guidelines in all procedures.
  • Dispense and fit crutches; Instruct patient on correct usage.
  • Perform audiometry, vision, or additional tests when indicated or by provider order.
  • Perform peak flow testing and nebulizer treatments.
  • Provide emergency services during hours of clinic operation (CPR, First Aid, AED). 
• Provide care for patients not seen by a medical provider in various methods such as in-person, by phone, and/or electronically:

• Educate and enhance patient’s knowledge of medical and psychiatric conditions:
  • Provide knowledgeable, appropriate health advice to patients. Promote prevention practices for maintenance of health and general well-being.
  • Educate patient in treatment of disease or injury. Assure patient understanding of condition to enhance compliance with medical provider’s orders.
  • Provide patients with information sheets, brochures, and online references pertinent to medical and psychiatric needs and health promotion.
  • Promote patient awareness of early signs and symptoms of complications and action plan for intervention of disease or condition.
  • Use available communication resources to assure comprehension of care and treatment explanations. 
• Perform general nursing procedures within the scope of nursing practice to address clinic needs.
  • Participate in annual review and revision of nursing procedures.
  • Open and close clinic per procedure guidelines.
  • Clean patient care areas following Infection Control guidelines.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment when indicated.
  • Replenish medical and housekeeping supplies that are required for daily clinical operations.
  • Perform routine assignments for clinic maintenance, including but not limited to: monitoring of emergency cart, AED, oxygen canisters, urine test strips, and cleaning of autoclave, instrument cleaning and sterilization, etc.
  • Monitor supply/implant inventory. Notify supply ordering staff in a timely manner if supply/implant inventory is low.
  • Report defective and/or expired medical devices, supplies, equipment, medication/vaccines etc to Associate Director in a timely manner when identified. 
• Provide assistance to Immunization Compliance Officer to assure Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Meningitis immunizations, and Tuberculosis screening requirements are in compliance with North Dakota University System policy:
  • Screen health history and immunization forms for current compliance with NDUS requirements.
  • Counsel students, advising of action required to meet requirements.
  • Participate in mass immunization clinics.
  • Assess indications for TB testing and per standing orders, obtain T-Spot.
  • Assist Immunization Compliance Nurse as needed.

  • Motivated to seek and lead progressive practice opportunities to enhance service to students
  • Provide outreach education to the greater UND campus, (peer educators, student organizations, faculty, etc.)
  • Collaborate with greater Grand Forks community in public health practices and initiatives

Minimum Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Dakota and Minnesota or eligible for licensure prior to start date OR Graduate of an accredited nursing program with current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of North Dakota and Minnesota or eligible for licensure prior to start date AND two years of related experience
• CPR certified, or obtain certification within 30 days of employment
• General computer experience
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing
• Two years of nursing experience
• Work experience in College Health, ambulatory care, or public health setting
• EHR experience
