Child & Adolescent Fellowship Director

Salary/Position Classification

• $85,000 contract, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
• 8-12 hours per week
• This position will work onsite the Fargo, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

The Child & Adolescent Fellowship Director will work within the Department in the UND-SMHS to oversee the subspecialty training of physicians and ensure compliance with ACGME standards. The addition of this 0.2 - 0.3FTE position is a necessary element in the ACGME Common Program Requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Program Leadership and Administration
  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program in compliance with ACGME Program Requirements
  • Serve as the ACGME designated Program Director, with responsibility for program accreditation, annual program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement
  • Ensure adequate protected time for program administration and fellow supervision consistent with ACGME requirements
  • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate fellowship core faculty and collaborate in the hiring and supervision of the program coordinator
  • Develop and manage the program budget in collaboration with departmental and GME leadership
• Educational Program Development
  • Design, implement, and oversee a comprehensive curriculum that meets or exceeds ACGME Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training requirements
  • Ensure fellows achieve competency across all ACGME domains, including patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, systems based practice, practice based learning, and interpersonal communication
  • Oversee fellow evaluations, milestone reporting, remediation, and promotion decisions
  • Foster a learning environment that emphasizes trauma informed care, cultural humility, interdisciplinary collaboration, and wellness
• Clinical Supervision and Teaching
  • Ensure direct clinical supervision and teaching to fellows in outpatient, inpatient, and community based child and adolescent psychiatry settings
  • Ensure fellows have exposure to a broad range of clinical experiences, including rural psychiatry, telepsychiatry, collaborative care, and care for underserved populations
  • Promote evidence based, ethical, and developmentally informed psychiatric practice
• Recruitment and Faculty Development
  • Lead fellowship recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes
  • Mentor faculty in teaching, supervision, and scholarly activity related to child and adolescent psychiatry education
  • Support faculty development aligned with ACGME expectations and UND academic mission
• Scholarly Activity and Community Engagement
  • Engage in scholarly activity consistent with faculty rank, including education, clinical innovation, research, or community based scholarship
  • Collaborate with UND faculty, Healthcare organizations, state agencies, and community partners to advance child and adolescent mental health across North Dakota
  • Represent the fellowship program at institutional, regional, and national levels
• Fellow and Program Wellness
  • Monitor fellow workload, stress, and well being, and intervene when learning or personal conditions may impair performance, as required by ACGME standards
  • Promote a culture of psychological safety, professionalism, and inclusivity 

Required Competencies

• Educational Leadership: Provides strategic leadership for fellowship curriculum development, implementation, and continuous quality improvement in alignment with ACGME Psychiatry Program Requirements.
• Faculty Leadership & Development: Recruits, mentors, evaluates, and develops core and clinical faculty; fosters a culture of educational excellence and accountability.
• Fellowship Assessment & Advancement: Oversees fellowship selection, evaluation, clinical competency committee processes, remediation, promotion, and due process.
• Clinical Training Oversight: Maintains high quality, ethical, and supervised clinical learning environments across training sites.
• Program Administration & Management: Manages program operations, collaboration with departmental and institutional GME leadership, assists department leadership in budgeting
• Professionalism, Wellness, & Learning Environment: Promotes professionalism, psychological safety, and fellowship well-being within the learning environment.

Minimum Requirements

• Must have an MD, DO, or equivalent degree
• Eligibility for medical licensure in North Dakota
• Five years of post fellowship clinical experience in child and adolescent psychiatry
• Demonstrated experience in graduate medical education, supervision, or academic leadership
• Ability to meet ACGME requirements for Program Director appointment
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience as a fellowship or residency program director, associate program director, or core faculty
