  • $60,000 - $70,000 annual, Exempt

Purpose of Position

The purpose of the Assistant Football Coach - Defense (LB) position is to assist the Head Football Coach with all aspects of a Division I Football program. This position provides comprehensive assistance to the Athletics Department in the area of providing comprehensive instruction to the team. This position will provide instruction to the team that includes teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, teaching team and individual leadership concepts/skills, as well as providing general safety instruction. Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide Instruction Specific to the Football Team.
    • Design instructional/training in-season/off-season specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
    • Teach basic physical health concepts (to include nutritional education) specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
    • Assist with all facets of coaching at all UND games and practices.
    • Provide instruction related to team and leadership concepts/skills specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
    • Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate. Specifically instruct student-athletes on safe training and exercise techniques.
    • Provide support and encouragement to promote the mental and physical well-being of the student-athletes.
    • Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student- athletes.
    • Assist/run practices under the direction of the Head Coach.
    • Assist strength & conditioning coach with weight-lifting and conditioning practices, as needed.
    • Assist with academic supervision of student-athletes.
    • Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student- athletes.
    • Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations.
    • Other duties assigned by Football Head Coach. 
  • Recruit and Evaluate Prospective Student-Athletes / Scouting 
    • Recruit quality prospective student-athletes for the football program.
    • Handle day-to-day correspondence, including email, print mail, and social media, as assigned.
    • Handle weekly telephone calls, as assigned.
    • Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits, as assigned.
    • Handle documentation for each prospective student-athlete in accordance with NCAA and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules.
    • Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations
    • Assist with scouting of specific opponents, as assigned.
    • Assist with statistics at all UND games and practices.
    • Assist with team travel responsibilities, as assigned. 
  • Social Media / Public Relations / Fundraising
    • Assist with social media for the football program, when applicable.
    • Develop community support for the program and participate in Athletics department and fundraising activities, as assigned.
    • Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student- athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
    • Assist with maintaining contact with football alumni and boosters, as assigned.
    • Follow all NCAA, conference, and UND rules and regulations.
  • Assist with Camps / Clinic & Other Duties
    • Assist with all aspects of football camps/clinics.
    • Follow all university hiring procedures.
    • Prepare Job Data hire forms for each camp coach/counselor, monitor/approve all timesheets, if applicable.

Required Competencies

  • Must have effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and computer skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize.
  • Ability to teach and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and und rules and regulations.
  • Must have commitment to academic success of student-athletes.
  • Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student athletes including having a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 3 seasons of football coaching experience at the NCAA Division I,II, or professional level.
  • Experience coaching and teaching linebacker position proper technique.
  • Experience with NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check (CHBC).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.
  • NCAA Division I recruiting experience in the Midwest and West Coast of the United States.
  • NCAA Division I football coaching experience at the FBS level.
  • Experience with summer football camps.
  • Experience analyzing film to create player breakdowns.
  • Experience as a collegiate football player.
