The Assistant Director of Student Well-Being plays a critical role in development, coordination, and evaluation of a program to support student success and well-being. This position ensures students receive holistic guidance in academic achievement, professional development, mental health, and overall well-being. Leveraging expertise in social work, the director will design and implement well-being programs, provide individualized student support, and collaborate with faculty and staff to enhance student success.
The Student Success & Well-Being program offers a comprehensive suite of tools and resources designed to build essential academic and professional skills while promoting student well-being. These include personalized study plans, time management coaching, test-taking strategies, evaluations, and access to well-being and mental health services.
Our goal is to guide and uplift students as they navigate the rigorous demands of medical school. This program offers a supportive and responsive learning environment, ensuring that all students, especially those facing academic difficulties, receive the holistic encouragement and structure they need to thrive.
Duties & Responsibilities
Develop and Oversee Student Success Initiatives in the Student Success & Well-Being Program
1. Develop, lead, and oversee student success initiatives that support medical students:
• Academic performance
• Skills
• Behavioral Development
• Resilience
• Personal well-being
2. Assist in the evaluation of the program’s goals and effectiveness toward student success and well-being
3. Serve as a leader in campus-wide student success and well-being
4. Direct and support student success and well-being which includes study skills, notetaking, time management, etc. programming
5. Provide direction and oversight to the retention software initiatives
6. Supervise, mentor, and annually review professional staff
7. Assess effectiveness of tutor programming
Provide Individualized Strategic Guidance to Students Facing Academic or Personal Challenges
1. Meet medical students individually and provide situational and/or on-going assistance in the areas of stress management, resilience and well-being
2. Meet students in groups and provide situational and/or on-going assistance in the areas of stress management, resilience and well-being
3. Refer medical students for treatment of behavioral health issues as appropriate
4. Conduct outreach services statewide to SMHS medical students in the areas of health and well-being, both on-site and via videoconferencing or other electronic methods
5. Travel to all SMHS campuses (Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot) on a frequent basis to educate medical students on resilience and well-being
6. Prepare and present seminars, presentations, workshops, and educational activities on timely and appropriate topics (well-being, resilience, crisis-intervention, etc.) to medical students, faculty and staff
7. Provide needs assessments relating to education of medical students in resilience and well-being
8. Serve as a resource, advocate, and liaison to medical students in the areas of well-being and resilience 9. Work collaboratively with the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions, the four SMHS campus offices, the UND Counseling Center, UND Wellness Center, community health centers, and other UND and SMHS departments and entities as needed
Design and Implement Mental Health and Well-Being Programming
1. Design and implement programming and education for students including:
• Mental health and well-being
• Stress management
• Self-care strategies
• Work-life balance
2. Conduct educational sessions (SIMPLE, Achieve) as the instructor of record, on topics such as emotional intelligence, burnout prevention, and mindfulness.
3. Create and maintain student support systems, including peer mentorship programs and well-being advocacy groups.
4. Advocate students’ needs by collaborating with campus health services, career development teams, and academic advisors.
