Purpose of Position

The department of Theater Arts is in need of an Assistant Costume Shop Manager to assist in the smooth running of the costume shop, supervising costume shop assistants, and keeping the costume creation process moving.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will collaborate with the costume designer/costume shop manager to oversee the fabrication and fit of all garments for theatrical productions.
  • This position helps with daily tasks, assisting the student employees and guiding as needed based on varying levels of sewing ability, all with the goal of ensuring projects assigned by the costume designer/costume shop manager are completed in time for use in each show.
  • The successful candidate's daily tasks will also include arranging fittings, projects and alterations, helping establish workflow for each UND Theatre Arts production. They will use both existing (purchased) and custom patterns to construct costumes and guide students in creating costumes.
  • This position shares the responsibility for maintaining and organizing shop and storage spaces.
  • Attend monthly shop meetings.
  • Communicate adjustments needed to the costume shop manager to ensure a cohesive workflow within the costume shop.

Required Competencies

  • Proficient in use of an Overlock (Serger).
  • Ability to maintain Sewing machines
  • Highly organized and able to effectively organize and lead a team of students with varying levels of costume shop or sewing experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ability to sew by hand and using a machine. 
  • Successful completion of a Standard Criminal History Background Check
