Salary/Position Classification

  • $70,000 - $86,000 annual, Exempt

Purpose of Position

The purpose of the Assistant Coach – Men’s Basketball position is to assist the Head Men’s Basketball Coach with all aspects of our Division I basketball program. This position will provide instruction to the men’s basketball team that includes teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, teaching team and individual leadership concepts/skills as well as providing general safety instruction. This position will also be responsible for the recruitment & retention of all current and prospective student-athletes. Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction specific to Men's Basketball
    • Design instructional/training in-season/off-season specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
    • Teach basic physical health concepts (to include nutritional education) specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
    • Provide instruction related to team and leadership concepts/skills specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
    • Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate. Specifically instruct student-athletes on safe training and exercise techniques.
    • Provide support and encouragement to promote the mental well-being of the student-athletes.
    • Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes.
    • Assist/run practices under the direction of the head coach.
    • Assist strength coach with weight-lifting and conditioning practices, as needed.
    • Assist with academic supervision of the student-athletes.
    • Assist with all facets of coaching at all UND games and practices.
    • Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations. 
  • Recruit & Evaluate prospective student athletes, scouting & team travel
    • Recruit quality prospective student-athletes for the basketball program.
    • Handle day-to-day correspondence, both email and social media, as assigned.
    • Handle all weekly recruiting telephone calls.
    • Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits, as assigned.
    • Handle documentation for each prospective student athlete in accordance with NCAA and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules.
    • Assist with statistics at all UND games and practices.
    • Provide scouting analysis of current and future team opponents.
    • Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations.
    • Assist with team travel, as assigned. 
  • Social Media, Public Relations & Fundraising
    • Assist with social media for basketball program, when applicable.
    • Develop community support for the program and participate in Athletics department and fundraising activities, as assigned.
    • Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
    • Assist with maintaining contact with basketball alumni and boosters, as assigned.
    • Follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.
    • Other media & fundraising duties as assigned by the Head Men’s Basketball Coach. 
  • Assist with camps, clinics & other duties
    • Assist with all aspects of basketball camps/clinics, as assigned.
    • Follow all university hiring procedures, as assigned.
    • Prepare Job Data Hire forms for each camp coach/counselor & monitor/approve all hourly reporting forms.
    • Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations.
    • All other duties as assigned by the Head Men’s Basketball Coach and/or Director of Athletics. 

Required Competencies

  • Must have effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and computer skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize.
  • Ability to teach and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and und rules and regulations.
  • Must have commitment to academic success of student athletes.
  • Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student athletes.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 4 years basketball coaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • 4 years basketball recruiting experience at the collegiate level.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience coaching basketball at the NCAA Division I or Division II level.
  • Experience in collegiate basketball recruiting in the Central Time Zone.
  • 3 seasons of collegiate basketball playing experience.
  • Experience directing summer basketball camps.
  • Experience with fundraising.
