  • $20.00+ hourly, Dependent on Experience, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • $5000 sign-on bonus: 
    • $2,500 paying at hire, remaining $2,500 paying upon successful completed of the 6 month probationary period
  • 40 hours per week

Purpose of Position

This is a non-student/full-time, benefited position that may not support the schedule of a student employee.  Please consider your schedule before applying.

The Aircraft Refueler position provides aircraft/helicopter movement operations by towing from indoor storage hangars to designated ramp parking locations and positioning back into indoor storage hangars during non-flying activity or hazardous weather conditions. Conducts fueling operations for fixed wing aircraft and helicopter fleet using mobile trucks. Performs ground support operations for fleet aircraft and helicopters including: external power engine starting, pre-heating for cold engines, defrosting to remove contamination, and deicing to allow safe take-off. Executes tank farm operations by inspecting systems, filling mobile fuel trucks, and offloading bulk aviation gasoline tanker trucks into bulk storage tanks. Performs all duties in accordance with FAA, State, and local governing procedures. Executes duties applying principles outlined in Safety Management System policy and applicable operational checklists.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct flight line support operations:
    • Provide parking directions to incoming aircraft/helicopters and position on designated ramp parking locations.
    • Secure aircraft/helicopters out-of-doors with chocks and tie downs; move craft to indoor storage during extreme weather conditions.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in stacking and removing aircraft/helicopters from indoor storage hangars; ensure craft are secured/with minimum established safety clearance distances complied with.
    • Demonstrate proper aircraft/helicopter movement handling and compliance with ramp designated parking on the ramp.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in the operation of equipment such as tug tow tractors, electric hangar doors, tow bars and helicopter carts.
    • Provide ground servicing support for air service missions and coordinate requirements for transient aircraft.
    • Provide ground support equipment services as required for UND and UND sponsored aircraft.
    • Conduct cleaning of aircraft/helicopter windows and perform spot washing of aircraft leading edges as required.
    • Perform external power cart engine starting operations on aircraft/helicopters when requested.
    • Preheat aircraft/helicopter engine(s) in cold weather; conduct aircraft defrosting/deicing operations as required. - (40%)
  •  Fueling Operations: Receive/store/dispense aviation fuels and oils:
    • Perform fuel quality control confirmation checks on tank farm bulk storage tank drain sumps and filter separator drain sumps; perform inspections including differential pressure checks, inventory reconciliation, and confirming system operational safety.
    • Off load tanker trucks/load mobile fuel trucks in accordance with established checklist procedures.
    • Perform/document mobile fuel truck daily inspections and security checks; conduct quality confirmation checks by obtaining tank and filter separator sump samples prior to use each day; fill trucks at tank farm as required.
    • Record number of gallons delivered or removed from truck to specific aircraft/helicopters; service aircraft/helicopters with oil as required and record amount for inventory control.
    • Perform aircraft/helicopter fueling procedures in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, Grand Forks Airport Authority policy, and federal/state/local governing directives.
    • Park fuel trucks in designated outdoor locations and park indoors when required.
    • Conduct all operations applying Safety Management System policy criteria and applicable operational checklists. - (30%)
  •  Care/Maintenance of ramp and facilities:
    • Maintain accessibility of tie-downs anchor points by removing snow, ice, dirt, and other debris as required.
    • Provide tie down straps and chocks for aircraft; monitor/confirm placement and removal as applicable.
    • Confirm FOD is removed/secured from ramp areas; maintain cleanliness of ramp areas and facilities; empty trash from receptacles and empty sump stand containers; report any deficiencies as required.
    • Correct or coordinate correction of all safety related issues.
    • Clear snow from UND areas and facilities according to airport host/tenant agreement; confirm clear accessibility of entry/exit doors and fire extinguishers.
    • Notify appropriate personnel of facility damage or defects.
    • Notify airport of discrepancies identified with tank farm system.
    • Notify appropriate personnel of security related requirements. - (15%)
  • Train full/part-time staff:
    • Conduct training on newly assigned staff and accomplish recurrent training as required complying with applicable checklist procedures for each operation or task.
    • Serve as a Training Certifier confirming staff are proficient to perform each operation and assess effectiveness of training by implementing standard techniques .
    • Train staff in the operation of equipment such as tug tow tractors, fuel trucks, electric hangar doors, tow bars, helicopter carts, heaters, defrost/deice carts, ground power carts, and bug busting wash carts; utilize applicable operational checklist procedures.
    • Remain knowledgeable training status of all staff; plan, coordinate, and document training events as required.
    • Teach safe aircraft/helicopter fueling procedures in accordance with all governing directives and Line SOP checklist procedures.
    • Train staff to proficiency in cleaning of windshields and spot-washing aircraft; place focus and emphasis on preventing damage to aircraft/helicopters.
    • Train personnel to proficiency in fire safety requirements and proper fire-fighting procedures. - (10%)
  • Supervise flight line operations during assigned shift and accomplish other duties as assigned:
    • Assign specific duties to staff during assigned shift, effectively utilizing available manpower to execute required duties.
    • Provide Flight Line Manager with evaluations of subordinate staff job performance and documentation for unacceptable job performance areas.
    • Ensure all duties are performed in accordance with Line Standard Operations Procedures and all applicable governing directives.
    • Document/report all instances of damage to equipment/vehicles or aircraft/helicopters.
    • Keep Flight Line Manager advised of shift status and all abnormal situations.
    • Coordinate completion of additional duty tasks as staffing and flying activity allows.
    • Coordinate/communicate frequently with maintenance, wash bay, avionics, dispatch, and SOF/MOD throughout assigned shift.
    • Communicate and brief assigned staff throughout work shift ensuring operational safety requirements are sustained. - (5%)

Required Competencies

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Will perform repetitious body movements (climbing, bending, and extensive walking) and lift or move heavy objects – up to 70 pounds.
  • Will use mechanical aptitude.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent education.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude/experience with basic hand/power tools, etc.
  • Valid Drivers License.
  • Pre-employment and random drug tests required.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check and the ability to obtain a ramp security badge.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven experience with flight and rotary wing aircraft.
  • Proven experience with flight line and fueling operations.
  • Proven experience using equipment and tools used in the operation of aircraft, tow tractors, heaters, refuelers, etc.
  • Proven experience performing line support duties, within the past 5-years.
