In this role, you’ll collaborate with ND SBDC staff and a fellow intern to design, structure, and populate a custom database of verified business information collected from real-world business plans and financials. You’ll also support the integration of artificial intelligence to improve how advisors and clients access relevant data for planning and decision-making.

This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in AI applications, data structuring, and business intelligence. You’ll build valuable technical and strategic skills while working on a meaningful project that addresses real needs in North Dakota’s most rural communities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing the structure and functionality of a digital repository of business plans, projections, and other key documents
  • Support the development of keyword-based search functionality that filters data by industry, financing program, geographic location, and more
  • Collaborate with staff to write and test AI prompts that enable fast, accurate, and context-specific data retrieval
  • Validate AI-generated outputs to ensure results are accurate and relevant to user goals
  • Document prompt-testing procedures and outcomes to guide future refinement
  • Contribute to process improvements and brainstorm ways to scale the tool’s usefulness across centers
  • Explore AI integration with existing SBDC planning tools to embed local comp data directly into business plan builders
  • Gain exposure to rural economic development needs and strategies through project immersion

Required Competencies

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Interest in using AI and data tools to solve real-world problems
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Comfortable learning new tools and technologies
  • Working knowledge of business or market analysis principles
  • Detail-oriented mindset with solid organization and documentation habits
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Commitment to ethical data use and user privacy

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled UND student, at least at sophomore status
  • Major field of study in business, economics, data science, computer science, or a related field
  • Related experience via coursework, internship, or independent project work
  • Graduating no earlier than May 2026

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with prompt engineering and AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)
  • Experience structuring or working with databases or repositories
