Salary/Position Classification

  • $44,000 annual, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite.

Purpose of Position

The purpose of the position is to provide academic advisement, recruitment, and retention to undergraduate students at the University of North Dakota. This position helps to advise any/all undergraduate majors and minors. Academic advisors help to serve the needs of the Core Advising team as well as any unmet student needs across campus. Academic advisors will utilize Campus Connection (Academic Requirement Reports) and Degree Map to advise and interact with students regularly. Advisors will attend commencement ceremonies and other student success programming.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • General Advising
    • Provide academic, advanced degree program, and career advising for current on-campus and online undergraduate programs, applying knowledge of all degree requirements
    • Meet with students on an appointment and drop-in basis in the Student Academic Success & Career Engagement office
    • Advise incoming first-year and transfer students during the new student advising and registration period
    • Understand the diverse needs of various student populations (e.g., online, military-affiliated, athletes, international, and other student groups)
    • Understand and appropriately apply multiple advising models and theories
    • Participate in advising assessment
    • Meet with prospective and transfer students interested in the University and assigned programs
    • Collaborate with departments of assigned programs to address advising needs in the department
    • Write letters of recommendation for students and serve as a reference for students as needed
  • Understand, utilize, and accurately communicate policies, procedures, technology/tools, and resources to advisees
    • Understand and communicate institutional specific policies and procedures such as term dates and deadlines, ES petitions, Ad Pro petitions, withdrawal processes, graduation applications, changes of major, collaborative course processes, readmission and reinstatement processes, academic grievance processes, etc.
    • Understand program/college/University goals for retention and graduation
    • Have a basic knowledge of financial aid
    • Utilize career exploration tools and services (e.g., Academic and Career Exploration, Career Services events, pairings of degree options, and graduate or professional degree options)
    • Be aware of and share campus resources and services with advisees
    • Utilize advising technology, including Campus Connection, Civitas products, and others, as necessary in general advising
    • Understand the technology students use at UND, including Blackboard, Handshake, etc.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience with use of advising tools (e.g., campus connection)
