  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite our Grand Forks, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

The Research Computing Systems Administrator will assist the Sr. HPC Systems Administrator with the deployment, administration, and maintenance of advanced cyberinfrastructure facilities and resources maintained by the UND Computational Research Center; including but not limited to: computational hardware, software, storage, and network services associated with high performance computing (HPC), virtual reality, and visualization systems for all operating systems (Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android, etc..).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Engineer and NDUS CTS System Administration Staff to serve as a backup system administrator for UND CRC’s research computing platforms administered by NDUS CTS.
    • Assist the Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, CI Engineer and NDUS CTS (Core Technology Services) with the system administration of UND CRC research computing platforms administered by NDUS CTS under the UND/NDUS SLA agreement.
    • Serve as backup system administrator for UND CRC research computing platforms when UND CRC or NDUS CTS system administration staff are on leave or otherwise unavailable.
    • Coordinate with Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, CI Engineer and NDUS CTS staff on the creation and removal of accounts for UND research computing platforms managed by NDUS CTS.
    • Perform other system administration activities as directed by the Sr. HPC Systems Administrator. 
  • Coordinate with Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, CI Engineer and NDUS CTS system administration staff to compile and install scientific software within research computing platforms.
    • Compile and install scientific software on UND CRC research computing platforms that is not deployable as a Bright Cluster Manager software package.
    • Assist CI Engineer and NDUS CTS staff in the installation of scientific software that is available through Bright Cluster Manager as needed.
    • Install other software as directed by Sr. HPC Systems Administrator.
    • Assist Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, CI Engineer and NDUS CTS staff with the deployment and maintenance of software licensing servers. 
  • Coordinate with Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, CI Engineer, and NDUS CTS on high performance computing network interconnects, campus networks, and regional research networks relevant to UND CRC activities.
    • Follow NDUS CTS Network Services policy on UND campus and NDUS Data Center networks.
    • Assist the CRC CI Engineer in the deployment and maintenance of DREAM Lab Ethernet networks.
    • Assist CRC Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, CI Engineer, NDUS CTS Network Services and System Administrators with other UND CRC Ethernet and InfiniBand networks as needed.
    • Assist CI Engineer with NDILLI ScienceDMZ and Northern Tier Network regional research networks as directed by ACI Manager.
  • Maintain equipment inventory and documentation servers for UND CRC.
    • Assist CI Engineer in the maintenance of the asset management system for UND CRC equipment and software.
    • Coordinate with the CI Engineer and UND VPRED (office of the Vice President of Research & Economic Development) asset manager to complete annual inventory of UND CRC assets.
    • Assist CI Engineer in the maintenance of the documentation server for UND CRC DREAM Lab.
    • Extend use of documentation server as needed for other UND CRC activities.
    • Participate in the deployment, maintenance and monitoring of system and application monitoring software used by the CRC systems administration team.
  • Triage user support tickets and route tickets to appropriate staff.
    • Assist CRC Sr. HPC Systems Administrator with resolution of support tickets submitted via the NDUS Teamdynamix Support Ticketing System to the CRC support group.
    • Assist CRC Sr. HPC Systems Administrator in the triage in-coming support tickets and route support tickets to the appropriate UND CRC or NDUS CTS staff member.
    • Create server accounts as appropriate based on new account request tickets.
    • Escalate unresolved support issues to Sr. HPC Systems Administrator as needed. 
  • Coordinate with Sr. HPC Systems Administrator, CI Engineer and University IT to provide desktop support for UND CRC staff and laboratory spaces.
    • Follow established system for providing desktop support for UND CRC staff computers and UND CRC laboratory spaces such as the DREAM Lab.
    • Follow University IT policy and methods for managing desktop and mobile devices for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android devices.
    • Provide system administration services for the DREAM Lab’s rack-mounted 3D graphics workstations.
    • Install desktop and mobile software as directed.
  • Assist in the development of funding proposals.
    • Provide detailed text for funding proposals as requested by ACI Manager.
    • Must respond in a timely manner to requests made outside of regular work hours.
    • Fulfill additional duties as outlined in the project description of funded grant awards.
    • Perform duties related to the development of funding proposals as directed by ACI Manager.

Required Competencies

  • Must have strong computer skills to include MS Office.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Must have strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, and the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Must be detail oriented and accurate.
  • Must be able to function independently as well as part of a team.
  • Must possess maturity to handle confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Must demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills and critical analyses abilities.
  • Must reside in the Grand Forks Region.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a closely related field; and 3 years direct related work experience.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 1 or more years of experience in High Performance Computing system administration.
  • 1 or more years of experience in Desktop Support.
  • Prior experience providing systems administration support for virtual reality devices.
